After the pieces are thrown, I wait until they achieve the leather hard stage. At this point I do any necessary trimming and create a band for my carving. The pot is then taken off the wheel and hand carved. The piece is bisque fired to 1800º. I then brush an oxide into the carving and , using a damp sponge, remove its excess . Only the carved area remains stained. The entire band is then wax resisted and the piece is glazed and fired to 2200°.
